According to tradition, the first church was erected in 779 by the kindness of princess Bertha, daughter of the Emperor Charlemagne. The church was devastated during a raid in 881.
The church became collegiate due to the arrival of canons in 1338, because the church was part of the defensive system of the city. It rested on the wall and its large square tower was fortified.
